What is a Bunion?

A bunion is the enlarging of a joint, specifically the big toe, at its base. The causes of this foot condition include stress or irregular joint movements. Sometimes they are on the little toe and are called bunionettes. If your family has a history of them, you have a higher change of getting one, however they are not considered to be a genetic condition.

What are the Symptoms of Bunions?

A big toe that is red and painful at the joint, big toe joint swelling, corns, firm bumps that are on the big toe or are around the foot’s outer edge, are all signs of bunions. You’ll not be able to move the toe easily also, so a loss of mobility in that foot or toe is also a sign of a bunion.

Bunion Treatments

Treatment options for bunions include anti-inflammatory medication and cortisone injections, along with ultrasound therapy and physical therapy. You can incorporate bunion pads and shoe inserts. There can be taping of the foot in a position that lowers the stress on the joint. If nothing like this seems to help a bunion, surgery is often the answer.

Bunion Surgery Recovery

Having bunion surgery will result in the need for post-op recovery. This time will vary from person to person. Typically, there are a few weeks where there is lessened mobility, swelling, and pain. Following your post-op guidelines can help you recover faster and easier.
